H καλύτερη μπάντα των 2 τελευταίων δεκαετιών επιστρέφει με νέο πειραματικό album: The King of Limbs. Ο συντάκτης στο Tinned Goods γράφει:
Although upon first listen you get the impression that something is missing from The King of Limbs, there is always something new to discover upon further investigation. Closer ‘Separator’ comes close to being truly hypnotic with final lines of
It’s like I’ve fallen out of bed from a long and vivid dream
Finally I’m free of all the weight I’ve been carrying
Wake me up
These lines sum up the experience of listening to this album pretty well, the music tries to paint unorthodox dreamlike landscapes and is often a lot lighter than typical Radiohead. With each listen, the perceived highlight of the album changes as new layers are unravelled and appetite for even more increases. Any of these individual songs have more facets than most indie rock bands will produce in their entire discography, that is why Radiohead can afford to sneak their albums out of the back door; there are so many people who wait impatiently for their next morsel.
Despite all of its merit, this will not go down as many people’s favourite Radiohead album. As a whole it is not quite cohesive enough to sit next to OK Computer and Kid A, but few, if any albums in the world are. The King of Limbs is experimental to say the least, and is perhaps a couple of tracks light, but what it has in its favour that it is an imposing juggernaut that constantly grows, although given the lyrical content Thom Yorke would probably prefer it if the LP was likened to a beautiful flower blossoming in the sun, a fitting compromise being that this is a venus flytrap, stunning unsuspecting music fans everywhere.
You have to wonder if there’ll ever be a day when the majority of music critics decide that a Radiohead album is pretty average and fails to engross the listener. Don’t put money on it.
